Denver ISSA Chapter Meeting at Secure World: How I Got Caught: A Deep Dive Into a 800K Fraud

Denver ISSA Chapter Meeting at Secure World: How I Got Caught: A Deep Dive Into a 800K Fraud

This session offers a rare, firsthand account of how fraud happens from the inside out—how small rationalizations escalate into financial crimes and how internal controls fail to stop them. In "How I Got Caught," I take audiences beyond case studies and into the decision-making process behind an $800,000 fraud against a Fortune 500 company. We’ll examine the red flags my company missed, the internal controls I exploited, and the warning signs that could have stopped me sooner. We’ll also break down the investigative process, including the three key methods the victim and the FBI used to build their case. We’ll also explore how AI and emerging technology could have detected the fraud much earlier. This dynamic and interactive session provides internal auditors with actionable insights into strengthening internal controls, recognizing behavioral warning signs, and enhancing fraud detection, helping organizations prevent financial damage before it happens.

Craig Stanland

Featured Speaker

Craig Stanland

In 2012, Craig Stanland made a choice that cost him everything: his career, marriage, homes, and even his will to live. His actions led to a two-year federal prison sentence and the unraveling of the life he'd built. But hitting rock bottom wasn't the end. It was the beginning. Today, Craig is a keynote speaker, reinvention architect, author of "Blank Canvas: How I Reinvented My Life After Prison," and a TEDx speaker with his talk, "How I Learned My Greatest Worth in Federal Prison." Through his work, Craig reveals invaluable lessons on fraud, ethics, compliance, and the slippery slope of decision-making. Additionally, he speaks on resilience, personal growth, and the art of reinvention, proving that it's never too late to rebuild, reimagine, and thrive. His insights have been featured in The Good Men Project, Addicted 2 Success, Tiny Buddha, Intelligent Change, Brainz Magazine, and The Altucher Report. When he's not on stage or writing, you'll find Craig hiking, paddleboarding, attending car shows, relaxing at the beach, or hanging out with his three special-needs cats.

AI: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

AI and Generative AI have become the buzzwords du jour since the launch of ChapGPT4, but AI has been in widespread and popular use for the better part of the past decade. We use it every day at home, in the office, and when we visit the doctor or go for an X-Ray. AI has been applied in many positive ways to make things easier for most of us, but it has also more recently been applied in very nefarious ways, some of which may lead to significant damage including to our safety as humans. This presentation looks at the development of Offensive AI and makes a case for greater development of Defensive AI. It will suggest that as cybersecurity professionals, we need “fire” to “fight fire” and that our current security toolsets are not equipped to defend us from the attacks of tomorrow. Learning Objectives: • Consider the “Maturity Paradox”, the gap between new technology being implemented and the security controls necessary to protect that new technology. What risks are we exposing ourselves and our organizations to? • Examine the arming and weaponization of malicious bots and malware using AI. • Gain a better understanding of the power and dangers of Offensive AI. • Consider the benefits of employing AI Defensive tools to protect us from Offensive AI. How will this change that way that cybersecurity work? Objectivity: No vendor or product will be favored during this presentation. The presentation may discuss new technologies that are, or will shortly, be available, new approaches to solving problems, and what some organizations or governments are doing in the topic areas discussed in the presentation. The overall objective is to provide valuable educational insights for attendees to take away with them in a vendor and technology neutral environment.

Denver OWASP July Meetup - Join Us!

Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend... Join us on July 16th for food, drinks, networking and an exciting presentation. Networking with your peers starts at 5:30 pm - announcements and presentation starts at 6:00pm . This month's presentation is brought to you by Endor Labs! Presentation: Evolving Your AppSec Program in the Era of AI Abstract: AI is already transforming how software is built—but for security teams, it’s mostly just making life harder. Developers are shipping AI-generated code at breakneck speed, while security teams struggle to keep up. The challenge isn’t just securing AI-generated code and systems—it’s evolving your AppSec program to keep pace with software development. We'll explore how security teams can evolve their programs across two key dimensions: securing AI-driven software development and using AI to enhance security workflows. You’ll learn: Strategies for managing risks from AI-generated code and autonomous agents How security teams can use AI to reduce work and improve security outcomes Where AI can enhance security—and where human expertise remains irreplaceable. AI isn’t just a security challenge; it’s a chance to build a smarter, more efficient security program. Join us to learn how to make AI work for security, not against it.

AI/ML Special Interest Group - Agent vs Agent: The Future of AI-Powered Cyber Warfare

AI/ML Special Interest Group - Agent vs Agent: The Future of AI-Powered Cyber Warfare

In the past few years, venture capitalists have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into startups developing “cybersecurity digital employees.” These AI-powered agents are engineered to replace or augment human roles in security operations—from SOC analysts to incident responders. Meanwhile, threat actors are deploying their own offensive AI agents capable of persistent and autonomous attacks. What happens when the battlefield is AI vs AI? This talk explores the coming age of autonomous cyber warfare—how both sides will weaponize intelligent agents, and what it means for the future of security operations.
